Hi Colleen,
I just wanted to thank you for your post on the Graphics Artists Guild
back in August. I just joined up in January and got a great small
business insurance quote through their alliance with the United States
Federation of Small Businesses.
Steve Horton
You are most welcome. We’ve gotten a lot of people hooked up with insurance from that post. Glad it worked for you, too. Click here to read for yourself.
Dear Ms. Doran,
I first discovered your books at the public library when i was in sixth grade and while at the time I didn’t fully understand the complexities of the story I immediately fell in love with it as well as the characters. Once I got older I was able to fully appreciate the beautiful world you’d created and fell in love all over again. I was never able to find the fourth volume which was troubling, but eventually I gave up. Having stumbled upon your website and seeing that you’ve decided to post all of Distant Soil gave me a pleasure I haven’t felt in some time. Thank you so much! I can’t wait to get reacquainted with everyone again! I’m equally delighted that I’m able to contact you and let you know just how much I’ve enjoyed reading your books. (It’s especially fun to read about your influences and comments on the characters. I wish more authors did this.) Again, thank you so much for sharing your work with everyone! I look forward to finally completing the series I love so much.
Sincerely,
Shawn

You are most welcome, Shawn. I am most appreciative of every library which carries my books. And very appreciative of letters like yours. It is extremely kind of you to take time out of your day to give me these words of encouragement!
Colleen,
It was a pleasure to meet you in person at the NYCC. I bought the first four volumes of A Distant Soil and you signed them all for me. I just wanted to apologize if I offended you with my ignorant remark that you have redrawn your books several times. After you explained what had happened with your publisher in the past I googled a little and there are some threads out there that still have it wrong. By the way, I loved volume 1. As I was reading it in bed over the course of a few nights with my girlfriend, I would have to stop and show her some of the pages and say “Look at the detail in these pages, what male artist would put that much time and energy into someones hair?” What amazing fine detail in you put into your work (dove and the thorns), just beautiful. Do you have any plans to do a colorized version anytime in the future? Again, it was a great pleasure meeting you last week.
Jason Pezzullo
Jason, I am the one who should apologize. It is very unrealistic of me to expect everyone who shows the most remote interest in my book to know all about my publishing history! It’s not really important, anyway. The only thing that is important is you were kind enough to pick up my books and you enjoy them!
I really don’t have any cause to complain about income on A Distant Soil since it sells better than 90% of the independent comics. However, it does take a lot of time to draw and I make so much better income doing other things, so it is my part time gig. It’s a gig I very much enjoy, as you may imagine!
And I just sent Joe Keating an update with art to see on the new issue not 24 hours ago! Go me!
I can’t believe how many cool projects I have to work on these days, so A Distant Soil is not only my pleasure, but it is my little break from some of the high pressure gigs! I’m finding it much more fun, actually. I worked on it all day Sunday!
Hi Colleen,
I apologize for not writing sooner, but I wanted to let you know I did indeed receive the Chewbacca illustration, and it is now safe and sound. Thank you again for the great piece, and thank you for the print as well, it was a welcome surprise.
I mentioned it in the blog post I just did today, and posted a copy of the Wookie picture. If that’s a problem, let me know and I will take it down immediately (and etiquette tells me I should have asked first, so I hang my head and cry your pardon). I did credit you and make sure to link back to your site (specifically the blog post where you posted the picture last month).
My blog is here should you want to see.
Have a great day, and best wishes for the work you have over the next couple of years, I look forward to checking it out.

You are awesome, and thanks for letting me know the art arrived. No worries about the delay, you waited long enough to get it! My apologies!
Dear Colleen:
