Who’s Watching the Watchmen?
on July 30th, 2009Been nattering about when to buy The Watchmen director’s cut dvd, perhaps after I’ve sold some art – and I did sell some art, and got requests to dig up more, so I will do that in a day or so. Thank you my most noble patrons!
This message came in from Brian Holst. Read and heed Watchmen fans!
I also saw in the replies for that post, that one of the things you want is the Watchmen Director’s Cut. I just got it on Blu-Ray today and I need to warn you about buying the Director’s Cut that is made available now!
The first thing I saw when I opened the Blu-Ray case was an advert for The Watchmen Ultimate Collector’s Edition… This edition will be the Director’s Cut with Tales Of The Black Freighter woven into it. It will also include the Under The Hood “documentary” as well as the Watchmen Motion Comic. It will be available in December 2009. The advert says that it is a 5-disc set, I believe this is the DVD set as the Blu-Ray set should be able to fit on a little fewer discs.
While I think it is great that they do this, I hate that they put this advert with the Movie you have just bought!! They did the same with the first Hellboy on DVD… I bought the 2-disc Collector’s Edition an in the case there was an advert for the 3-disc Director’s Cut edition of the movie.
At least New Line Cinema made it quite clear that they would be releasing Extended Editions of the LOTR‘s movies BEFORE the normal version was even released. That way you could at least decide if you wanted to wait or get the Theatrical Release DVD’s as soon as possible and then “upgrade” to the EE’s when they were released 6-7 months later.Well, I hope this helps a little on deciding whether you want the movie now or later

Most helpful. I’d intended to buy the director’s cut and Tales of the Black Freighter seperately, and now I will wait and get that fancy, schmancy boxed set later in the year instead.

oh good to know! I will wait too. I want the one with the TOTBF woven in.
I had some knowledge of the “Ultiamte” edition of Watchmen coming out around Christmas, so I didn’t get the Directors Cut. I figured why spend $20 then go out and spend more money on the same movie 5 months down the road.
Agreed. This strikes me as a rather calculated marketing ploy. So long as people KNOW the better edition is coming, many will wait.
I’ve sold most of my DVDs- with Netflix, there’s really little need for ownership- but I am keeping the Moore based material, no matter how flawed some of it is. I’ve even considered getting Return of the Swamp Thing, as it supposedly builds on some of Moore’s themes.
Now about that film of A Distant Soil…..
I’m going to see if a really inexpensive standard copy of the film is available, but if not, I will simply wait for the deluxe. I have three editions of the LOTR films, but a girl’s gotta draw the line somewhere.
I await the uber-deluxe boxed LOTR blue ray sets, and I hope they have some blooper reels included!
