Ninja Assassin penned by J Michael Straczynski premieres this week!
on November 24th, 2009Our buddy JMS is the scribe for the new Joel Silver, Wachowski Bros flick Ninja Assassin in theaters on November 25, a welcome respite for all the guys who were force to sit through Twilight screenings with their girlfriends.
Poor babies.
Raizo (Rain) is one of the world’s deadliest assassins, having been kidnapped as a child and raised by the Ozunu Clan, believed by the world to be a myth. When Raizo’s friend is executed by the clan, Raizo flees into hiding. He later reemerges, seeking revenge. Meanwhile, Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) is a Europol agent who investigates money linked to political murders and finds that it is linked to the Ozunu Clan. She defies her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), and retrieves secret agency files to find out more. The clan, finding out about the investigation, attempts to assassinate her, but she is rescued by Raizo. Hiding in Europe, Raizo and Mika must find a way to take down the Ozunu Clan.
The very talented Mr. Straczynski also wrote this lovely graphic novel. Which I drew. It is called The Book of Lost Souls.
The destinies of most people are defined early on. Then there are the others – the lost. Those whose numbers aren’t in yet, who could go toward the light or toward the darkness – indeed, who could be tipped one direction or another. And everything starts with the book. That’s what Jonathan is about to discover. When he took a suicide plunge off the London Bridge more than a century ago, the last place he expected to land was on his feet, in the present, standing at the entrance to a tunnel into a world of mysteries beyond his wildest imagination. A world of powers and principalities and, above all, rules that he’d best learn quickly. Or he’ll have to deal with the Dark Man. And what the Dark Man can’t turn, he devours. Collects Book of Lost Souls #1-6.

You can see the preview of Ninja Assassin at the official Warner Brothers site. It looks hot.

Huh. That’s a JMS film? Maybe I’ll give it a chance after all. The TV spots made it look like a simple bloodbath, and interested me not in the least, but I do so adore his writing. Midnight Nation is one of the most profound things I’ve read in comics in a long time, and I loved his meditation on Dr. Strange in the mini-series. Of course, there was that cool Lost Souls thing you mentioned as well.
Anyway, much as bloodbath action films leave me cold, if he’s at the writing helm, I’ll give it a chance. Thanks for the heads up!
I must be out of the loop, but I know nothing about Ninja Assassin. I understand the star is a big-name Korean actor.
If it were anybody but JMS I wouldn’t be seeing this. But it is, so I am. I also realize that what he wrote could still have been converted to a slash-fest, but I’m hoping for the best.
I gather that Rain is a big pop star in Korea who started acting with “Speed Racer”.
You know, Speed Racer was incredibly fun, but I had the luxury of watching it in a couple chunks at home. It might have been overkill watching it in one sitting at a real theatre.
Now about that Lost Souls movie…
LOL!
Glad to hear you liked Speed Racer. I thought it very underrated and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have Speed Racer in my Netflix queue, so I’ll get to it eventually. But when I was four years old that was my favorite show (that and Kimba!) and needless to say I couldn’t bring myself to see it in the theater. Not after what happened to my next great TV series love movie version… Wild Wild West. I will never forgive that one.
So… we’ll see.
I never saw it as a kid, but I had no interest in watching the film anyway. Just never saw the appeal of Speed Racer.
Then one day I was stuck in my hotel room, it was on, so I figured what the heck. I was shocked. I really liked it.
I’m getting it for my young ‘uns for Christmas. And I know they don’t read this blog, so no spoilers!
