Donation Incentive: Colleen’s Closet UPDATED
on January 15th, 2010
Just a few of the items I have pulled to give away. This stack includes a signed first edition in mint condition of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. Two signed copies of OPUS by Barry Windsor Smith. SEALED and brand new audio cd of Stephen King’s The Green Mile. Sealed and new audio autobiography by astronaut John Glenn. Two seasons of The X-Files dvd sealed and mint. First edition hardcover MINT signed Clive Barker’s Abarat.
Art of the Renaissance The Great Masters, mint condition, retail $75. Early folio by designer Thierry Mugler. Art book on wood block prints of Hokusai, mint condition.
I have at least ten times more stuff than shown here that I am giving away in this donation incentive.
If I really want to have a truly efficient and well-run office space, I need to get rid of a full third of my belongings.
That’s right, a third.
There isn’t enough shelf space to properly store art, and the books I use on a regular basis are drowning under books I hardly use at all. I do not have efficient resources for my morgue files. I just finished moving the ridiculously cluttered bookcases out of my studio and into storage to clear more light and work space, only to realize how rarely I actually use many of these things.
I don’t really want to let many of my belongings go, but the only alternative is to stuff rare books in the closet, seal manga into boxes never to be seen again, stow even more cool collectibles in my attic, and let even more really cool piles of really cool stuff gather dust in the barn.
That makes me sad. I would much rather have it all go to someone who will appreciate it. Who will use it, and enjoy it.
But listing all this stuff on ebay would be a royal pain in the butt.
Instead I will make these items cool donation incentives for the creation of more A Distant Soil pages.
Instead of selling it all off one item at a time, I am going to list categories of stuff for a flat price.
The base donation incentive price is $29.95. For that price, you will get at least $100 worth of goods. You pick the category, and I pick the cool stuff. Example: four hardcovers, cover price $25 each = $100. One DVD, one collectible item valued at $75 = $100.
Many items are sealed and mint, such as X-Files dvd’s. Others are gently used. Some are nifty things like comics company Christmas cards signed by the staff. Others are battered library books which make great reference (many are about doing business in Japan).
These are the donation levels:
BASE donation: $29.95 Available to anyone in the USA and Canada.
FOREIGN base Donation: $49.95 Sorry to charge so much, but shipping heavy books overseas is very expensive.
Super uber cool US/Canada stuff donation $100: This will bring you at least $300 worth of goodies. REALLY cool stuff.
Foreign uber cool donation $150: gets you $300 worth of goodies.
Here are the categories:
The Asia Pack: manga, books about Japan, Japanese language, art, history
Comics and Graphic Novels
Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror
Colleen’s Stuff: Books, collectibles, original art by me.
Literature/non-fiction/Litcrit/
POP CULTURE: rock collectibles, Disneyana, a mix of WhatEVAH. Music, magazines, books featuring David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, etc
Here are a few of the super-cool wild card items I will send to the lucky people who donate to this site. I will RANDOMLY dole out the cool stuff. No one person will get everything, but I will try to make sure everyone gets something pretty darned good.
A Lord of the Rings Merry Sideshow Weta sculpture bust: going for more than $300 on the collector market.
Clive Barker limited editions, first editions, signed and unsigned. Also the signed and numbered limited edition of Clive Barker’s Shadows in Eden.
Anne Rice signed first editions, hardcovers. Also, a bullwhip autographed by Anne Rice.
Frank Miller signed books
Neil Gaiman first edition hard covers and signed first editions.
A Kyomoto Collection Kamen Rider large scale figure.
The Knives of Legolas, plaque included, sealed.
Lord of the Rings Sideshow Weta Weapons of Gimli
Lord of the Rings Sideshow Weta Weapons of Legolas
Lord of the Rings Sideshow Weta Weapons of Aragorn
Lord of the Rings out of circulation toys.
X- Files dvd’s.
Rock concert backstage passes, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, etc.
A Distant Soil production work including blue line pre-press copies (one of a kind), cover transparencies (one made per printing of book,) color check sheets, etc.
J-Pop collectibles: many very old stickers, audiotapes, a few cd’s. Hikaru Genji, SMAP, Hiromi Go, Toshi, The Checkers, etc. I have NO idea what kind of condition some of these tapes are in, but I am sure you will get a kick out of adding these to your collection.
Many original Japanese editions of manga, some out of print. Mostly shojo or josei.
Many art books and books about art, how-to, etc. Conditions vary, but many are very fine.
I would like to clear out some serious space in the studio, and bring in some serious bucks for A Distant Soil.
The donation button is on the upper left. Just fill in the amount you’d like to donate, and if you’d like to specify a category, do so. Otherwise, I will choose for you.
All packages will be shipped within 2 weeks of receipt of payment or your money back. As those who participated in the last donation incentive can attest, I shipped every item promptly and all arrived in good condition.
I honestly don’t know how long I will run this: until I run out of stuff or get overwhelmed, I guess.
All funds go to the A Distant Soil piggybank.
THANK YOU!!!

Thanks to Arlene Harris, who sent in the first donation.
DUDE, this is teh awesomeness!
and I didn’t even know it at the time, but I’ll take it XD
(for my birthday, I took $100 and divided it into donations to my favorite webcomics. One sent me a nifty wallpaper for my laptop and another said she’s put the donation toward getting a new tablet. And now this! This is shaping up to be the coolest birthday ever
)
YAY! My family thinks I am a little nuts, but when I consider the time it would take to move all of this stuff at its true value, I would lose too much time from drawing, and I am booked for at least a year. I just don’t have the resources.
I tried selling some stuff last year on ebay, but it takes 20 minute to list one item, and I’m not in a position to properly grade collectibles.
I don’t want to give some of these very fine books to a library where they will get dog-eared in two minutes. They need to go to private collections. Some of the books are real gems.
I’m much happier letting this stuff go for bargain prices to save the time, and to give folks something cool.
now that I figured out how to finally log into wordpress (oiy WP you give me so many issues!) I find out that I didn’t add which categories I wanted with my donation. -.-;;
LOL! That’s OK. You can tell me right here, or drop a note on the contact form.
I figure you can surprise me. You know me pretty well. School has been hectic as usual and I got the flu a second time but I’m still here.
Hi, Colleen!! This is really a great idea! (my fanboy/collector heart started tingling again) – so I am sending you a donation – happy to know that I am also contributing to the A DISTANT SOIL piggybank! – hugs from your lovemonkey! **
LOL! MAJOR HUGS BACK! OOOO OOOo OOoo! LOVE MONKEY!
By the way, I must have been the biggest Clive Barker fan in the world at some point, because I have so many signed pristine mint first editions I can hardly believe it.
