And here’s a look at another pile of nifty things.

A signed and inscribed copy of Queen of the Damned, mint condition hard cover with dust jacket, by Anne Rice.

An Applause Lord of the Rings One Ring with collectible light up round case and chain.
A sealed and MINT Games Workshop Sauron figure.
A Rowena Morrill trading card set with a very nice copy of the notebook. It’s hard to get copies of Rowena’s work, so this is a nice find for a fan.
A SIGNED hardcover Al Severin/HG Wells bande desinee La Machine A Explorer Le Temps, with ORIGINAL FULL COLOR ARTIST SKETCH inside, articles in French enclosed with book, family photos enclosed with book, AND a copy of BILL COSMOS tabloid comic enclosed and signed inside. Extremely rare item valued at approximately $200.
Very fun comic collection Great Comic Cats circa 1981.
Movie collectible book Jimmy Durante The Candidate, a photographic interview, circa 1952. Nifty Hollywood memorabilia.
I honestly have no clue how I ended up with some of this cool stuff, but I know I bought a ton of collectibles from an old acquaintance who was having money problems. I am pretty sure that other stuff came from the collection of Frank Kelly Freas, which he gave to me about 25 years ago when he shut down his Virginia studio.
Don’t be shy about asking for specifics. The “prize” items are going to be doled out on a more or less random basis, but if you like particular things, and they are not on my “prize” list, then I have no problem putting them aside for you.
If you are into goth goodness, sing out. I have a large selection of gargoyle frames I purchased to use at RenFaires, which I have not done in years. If you would like some of these frames, I’d be happy to put that on your list.
Thank you SO MUCH for your support. The donations have been GREAT and I am deliriously happy to be in the black on the website and moving along with financing for the book itself.
PS: I feel I should point out that this donation incentive is not a sign that I am starving to death. I simply have way too much stuff, and think this is a good way to raise money to finance the end run of my series, since the book earns modest income. I am not in a position to take commissions. Taking commissions would just eat up more time I need to work on my books.
So, thanks for the concern. I really appreciate it! But I am sincere when I say I just need to move this stuff out of here. Some of this stuff has been sealed in boxes in a barn for years, and what good is that to anybody? I literally have enough collectibles and goodies to finance a heck of a lot of A Distant Soil pages, and moving it on to you guys in this way is the best use of my resources.
THANKS! I have been very touched by some of your letters. I know a lot of fans wouldn’t part with their treasures for anything, but I am happy to move them along.
I’m keeping PUHLENTY, believe me.

yay! I’m so happy you found a) a solution to your storage problem b) a good home for things that need them and c) a way to fund more ADS! I’m so excited, there’s enough win to go around for everyone
It’s worked out a little better than I thought it would, actually. I will be delighted if I can clear out all of this stuff and raise enough money for an issue’s worth of art.
BTW, it’s been fun doing this. I am not only pulling out a huge amount of stuff I didn’t even know I had, I am finally able to go through boxes I have not unpacked since I moved going on SIX years ago.
I found a beautiful Russian Icon Madonna and Child painted egg, and a porcelain space shuttle Limoge-style miniature box.
I’m keeping those.
I am very hopeful my Russian lacquerware is out there somewhere. I love Russian folk art.
w00t one day I may have to do this, though I don’t think I have even a quarter as much cool stuff as you do XD but my closet and attic if bursting with memorabilia that’s important to me at least you know?
I’d already sold off a good deal, and I donated several thousand comics some years ago, both to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and The U.S.O.. I am surprised I still have so many things.
Some of them are incredible. One an old Fortune magazine from the 1930′s. With a rather flattering article about Adolf Hitler.
I had boxes and boxes of old National Geographics that I donated to the library, but I kept the really old ones. Some are more than 100 years old.
And I am going to have the antique art supplies mounted in a shadow box.
I’m enjoying my very clean and well-organized studio, and if I can get my workroom to be as efficient and orderly, I will count it all worth it. And if it brings in some bucks for A Distant Soil, and makes people happy besides, we’re talking win-win-win!
See… you’re giving double value (at least) in selling these things. The supporters get to go “I really wanted this stuff, plus I got it from Colleen Doran! How cool is that!” And lurking in the background is also the knowledge that when you start getting ADS out again, they can go “I helped make that possible!”
At least, that’s the way I’d be looking at it if I could donate right now. I’m so bummed that my resources don’t allow it at present.
I’ve packed a few of the orders and am breathing easier already. It feels good. Rather like Christmas. And I get to be Santa!
