I’ve received a complaint that there appears to be some malware in our ComicSpace network ads. (UPDATE: It does appear to be in the ads. The ads have been removed and will not be replaced until the problem is fixed.)
The report is:
I was going to do a screen cap of the warning pop up today, but when I
visited the site this morning, I did not get it again. Instead, I got a
warning on my security bar of the browser — with the following message –****
This website wants to run the following add-on: ‘Remote Data Services Data
Control’ from ‘Microsoft Corporation.’ If you trust the website and the
add-on and want to allow it to run, click here.
This is not a Microsoft program. If you see it, do not click on it. Write me immediately at colleen@adistantsoil.com
I’ve reported this to ComicSpace already.

UPDATE: The culprit is indeed an open source ad software hack. Our open source ads are down and we await the green light from our tech people. For more info CLICK HERE.

have i mentioned how much I love Firefox’s Adblocker? Oh yes
(I tried to sign up for Google ads for my blog. It got denied, not sure why, won’t let me sign up again, won’t let me fix whatever it thought was wrong… waste of time. have you thought about running Project Wonderful ads?)
We’re running Project Wonderful ads right now. Your adblocker may be blocking them! LOL!
We don’t have a Google account, we have an account with ComicSpace. Ads come to ComicSpace through independent contracts as well as through Google.
I had a Google account on my old blog.
After AN ENTIRE YEAR waiting to get a single measly payment, I suddenly got a notice from them claiming they suspected click fraud on my site, and they canceled the account and didn’t pay me a dime. No kidding.
I assume some well-meaning fan was trying to click on my ads to bring me money, or perhaps we simply had a higher percentage of clicks than Google thought we ought to have.
Whatever.
You don’t want a Google account anyway. Since they only pay per click, you are never going to make any money unless you are getting millions of hits.
PW ads pay by bid, and our other ads rent space per cycle. The higher my page view count, the more money I get, regardless of whether anyone clicks on them.
Those click ads are a total rip off. The client is getting the right to expand their brand on your site and they don’t pay a dime unless someone goes to THEIR site. For crying out loud.
I get about 50,000 UNIQUE VIEWERS each month. That is only a fraction of my page views.
50,000 readers is decent magazine circulation. For that I ought to be paid for the rental of space on my site.
And 50,000 UNIQUE viewers is far higher than my sales, so here’s hoping some of those viewers translate into buyers eventually.
Except for pop-up ads, I never block ads. I might buy something. Best buy so far: Sciabica olive oil. The lavender olive oil is to die for. The ads sometimes pop up on the site.
I also bought makeup I saw advertised in my PW sidebar. Really nice deal on mineral makeup from a seller on Etsy.
BTW, it cracks me up when I see ZUDA ads and Tokypop ads and whatnot on my site. I just think that’s awesome.
I bought a book that was one of the PW ads. I haven’t read it, beyond the first few pages, but that’s only because I was finishing reading another book. Now that that’s done, I’m going to read this one. It looks charming. And I’ll tout it, if I really really like it.
I think the PW ads are very cool, and I like its business model. Because you’re right, Colleen — you’re serving as a billboard, so you should get rent for that, not a payment only if someone follows up on it or purchases something.
oh, okay, I got confused by the headline “Google Ads Behaving Badly” and thought that was your ad feed.
Thanks for the info re: google ads! I wont bother trying to fix it then and wait till I get my content up and running again before going another route.
Tokyopop ads XD yeahright!
Yeah. The problem appears to be a Google ad, even though it comes through ComicSpace.
A PW account is really easy to set up. You might as well go with it.
