I agree with you both.

There's a quote in that article: fans claiming rights to the work because the work is bigger than George Lucas. I've run into that a lot, even with my own work, which is hardly a worldwide phenom.

Some fans seem to believe if they like something they own it.

While I agree that the work can become an emotional experience, I don't think that conveys an ownership of anything except that emotional experience, which no revision of the work can take away from you.

I agree re: the Star Wars thing. When it comes to creator vs. consumer the consumer gets no say in the creative process, only the consuming one. The only vote you get is with your wallet.

I suspect that the Star Wars fans are going to be out of luck, since as creator of the material, Lucas has the right to change things according to his desire without accommodating the wishes of fans. Frank Frazetta would often rework his paintings, so that they were not what they had been originally, and no one contends that he didn't have that right. Heh.

Years ago, in an old issue of ... it might have been DISCOVER magazine ... I read about the persistence of the HeLa cancer cells. It's intriguing, but it is/was also a problem in the scientific community, because if they cross-contaminate other samples, the HeLa cells take over. It's very intriguing stuff to read about.
