There is NO guarantee that something you shoot from the internet is a copyrighted image.

There is no guarantee that something you shoot from the internet is NOT a copyrighted image.

An image you pick may very well be public domain. Or not.

For example, many image libraries for museums will not allow you to save the scans of the works on their websites.

Yet almost all of those images are public domain.

The fair use provision allows for copying individual images and texts in limited ways for personal or educational use. It is not a violation of copyright to make use of the work of others within the bounds of this statute.

Disinformentsia about copyright is rampant.

I wanted to know how to save things from websites, especially message boards, which could not be printed out.

You know all that Rick Olney nonsense? Remember how he posted dumb stuff and then deleted it? Like those IKILL pics?

If I just copy and paste his comments, someone could claim I altered the text. A screen shot is like a photo.

On the MAC, you hit command/shift/4.

This brings up a little bullseye. Drag and click your mouse, and you have a png image of whatever is on your computer screen. It will pop up on your desktop as PICTURE 1.

You can then open in image editing software or preview.

Pretty much anything on your screen can be copied this way. Even if it’s a copy protected image. Which pretty much negates the whole digital watermarking process.

But a png file is not good quality. So if you have a protected high res image on your website, at least anyone who is poaching your image will get a degraded quality png.

Push a couple of buttons and it converts to a png.

I have no problem with this, of course. My use of the images is for commentary on the works, and hopefully considered withink “fair use”. But I do try and cite ownership of the images anyway.
