D’mer has such a way with people! So far, Seren’s other servants want to kill him, Bast wants to get rid of him, and now Galahad and Minetti are ready to nip his head off. Other than that, he’s nasty to Liana and Kovar (the two people who would risk their own hides for his, not because they like him, but because they don’t want Seren to feel hurt). He should go into public relations!

I know Bast wants to get rid of him so she can have the Avatar to herself, but he should have tried to win her over or at least convince her that he had Seren’s best interests at heart. As is, she’s been there for less than a week and already has the snotty, prickly valet (and probably the rest of the staff) on her side. I bet even the earthlings would back her up as well.

Poor D’Mer, being so unstable must be hard to put up with, specially when he’s such a proud character.
A good counseling would help, or a nice night spent with Seren.

ah, bast. So quick to dig the claws in, to draw him away…

oh crap, did he just call him “Seren” in front of everyone? o_0 uh…

    Arlnee caught it!

The people not in on that knowledge might construe D’mer’s saying that name at that moment as something else entirely…

The ones not in the know, “Seren” might mean “ah! Seren hurt me!” Whereas the ones who know who Seren is know that D’mer is crying out, ashamed and needs to withdrawn to lick his wounds.

I’m sorry, for me its rather confusing the whole “Seren” vs “Rieken” thing…I still don’t see how it will stop Jasaon from killing Seren, if his orders are to kill the Avatar, and well….hmm….

go ahead and delete this if its too much spoilage, Colleen.
the core personality of Seren is a frightened little boy who was abused by the adults he trusted and now must deal with them as an adult even though they do not see him as such. To them, he is an acting out adolescent who must be controlled. Rieken was someone trying to overthrow the adults who abused Seren and when he died, he mind melded with Seren – it was only supposed to give him the information needed to lead, but instead part of Rieken was absorbed into Seren and then it was a battle of wills as to which personality would become the dominant one. Seren is dominant, but he knows how to use Rieken to his advantage.
D’Mer has undergone severe mental torture. He’s supposed to be a strong, agile bodyguard of the Avatar and suddenly all of his defenses have been destroy because of one careless or carefully planned act as well as the mental burn of a command he can not erase.

Then maybe it IS a good thing Bast is around. She’s not a bodyguard; more like a nanny.

My husband pondered earlier… “Bast has been on Earth a long, long time. Too bad she didn’t breed with the humans there. Just imagine what they’d call her children – little Bast-ards.”

@mamid Hahaha! XD that’s witty! And thanks for the resume, I don’t think it has any spoiler in it, it’s more a synopsis of what’s going on so far.

Well, there’s an additional factor not covered in that recap: that most of the Resistence think Rieken is their leader. They do not know that the person they see as Rieken is really Seren (because when he is out and about, Seren looks more like Rieken). Most in the Resistence do not know that the Avatar is their leader (obviously, since they’re sending Jason to kill him).

Mostly, among the humans the Avatar has been addressed as “Rieken” (because the Ovanans are trying to be careful to keep ONLY that name connected with any Resistence activity).

I think what gets confusing is that Liana knows both names, and uses them almost interchangably. So it blurs the line of what the humans know to call the Avatar.

Thank you Scribblerworks! I thought Beys knew that Seren=Rieken, now I see they might not know. Unless she just pretending to be on the rebels side, and actually wants to turn Jason into the new avatar. O_o
