Barry Lyga and moi to preview new GN at ALA
on June 23rd, 2010Sunday, June 27:
11:00 am – 11:30 am – Authors On the Pavilion. Barry Lyga with Colleen Doran: A Sneak Preview to His First Graphic Novel.
Barry Lyga’s first two novels, The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, and Boy Toy both received excellent reviews and have established him as a rising force in the world of young adult literature. Now, his with his first graphic novel, published by Houghton Mifflin on the way, Barry and his creative partner on the project, Colleen Doran will be here to give a sneak peek at the book and to talk about the process of collaboration on a graphic novel.
American Library Association Meeting to feature major graphic novel programming. Clink linky for complete info.
Complete idiot Colleen schedules prepaid hotel reservations for wrong dates. Will be in DC way before she needs to be. Will probably hole up in hotel room and get even more work done than at home. No distractions.
I love room service and Pay Per View.

Also you could have alerted us earlier and some of us who live within driving distance of DC (moi) may have attended. I did find the website a tad confusing in trying to figure how much I would have to pay to see your preview.
Well, actually I did mention that I might be going to the ALA, but I didn’t even know details until recently. The details I had were wrong, which is why I have the wrong hotel reservations. I put up the correct info as soon as I had it: today.
So, sorry about that, but I also thought the ALA was like the BEA: open only to the trade.
I also find the website confusing and have no idea how to suss out what is what. But if you can make heads or tails of it, here it is:
http://www.ala.org/ala/conferencesevents/upcoming/annual/registration/index.cfm
“Exhibits Only” (the floor with all the vendors and publishers) is $25. You can wander around the convention center, but I don’t think they’ll let you sneak into the various panels and meetings.
Diamond is organizing a huge mini-comic-con on the exhibit floor… I’ve heard rumors of cosplaying…
Kinda funny… librarians have made a science of organizing information and being able to find that information, and yet their website is a bit lacking…
I will be there, helping to seduce the innocent.
Here’s the plan:
Boys don’t like to read.
Boys like to read comics.
Libraries gauge success on circulation figures.
Boys and girls like to read comics.
Stock comics and graphic novels and kids will read the books.
Kids who read comics will read other stuff as well.
Kids then grow up loving books, become writers, booksellers, and librarians, who then promote books to other kids.
Thanks for that, Torsten.
And thanks for seducing the innocent! MWAHAHA! It’s like book crack!
There is the $100 Exhibits Supreme badge that includes the ALA President’s Program, Closing Session, and the Auditorium Speaker Series. but I am still not sure whether that includes Colleen’s presentation.
Let me warn you: we are only showing one page. I have done the breakdowns for the book (actually I think I have about 10 pages left, I need to check,) but the nature of the book is such that we are being very close with the content. I’m not even allowed to mention the title.
This is a very fun book to work on, BTW. Most of the work have done the last few years has been incredibly difficult, research and labor intensive. This book is just a party. I am truly enjoying it.
And to follow up: Work Bird has sent me the mojo!
In the last 60 days, I have done 16 pages of inks, and nearly 100 pages of breakdowns. That’s not a typo.
In the same period last year I did only 14 pages of inks and 16 pages of breakdowns.
Work Bird MOJO!
(Breakdowns are layouts, thumbnail sketches, or a combination of both.)
I am actually a little afraid to go out of town and break my stride. I’ve been invited to a few party functions, and may skip them all and stay in my room and work.
The GN Pavilion is on the exhibit floor. $25 gets you in, and you’ll probably score that in freebies from various publishers. Stop by the ALA store for Neil Gaiman posters, etc.
Jest doin’ mah job, ma’am.
I once seduced John McCain with Watchmen (c.2002?, right after it had made Time’s 20th Century list).
What would I recommend to Sarah Palin? I’d have to ask her what she likes to read, then match it.. 30 Days of Night? }]
first you’d have to teach her to readno bad Arlene, bad *wristslap*
