Thank you so much for reading A Distant Soil at the official website. We now have a FAQ’s page, and more work has been added to the Art Shop.
I’d also like to welcome our new advertisers. Many fine anime and webcomics companies would appreciate it if you would give them a look. I am not paid by the click, so looking is free for you and for them.
Check out The Phoenix Requiem.

yay, Phoenix Requiem is awesome!
Sere sure is a pushy old cow, isn’t she? At least Niniri knows how to get her way in an acceptable manner. Ninivir doesn’t realize how close to home he hit; if the resistance takes over, Niniri is much less likely to end up with her head on the block because of her kindness.
Ninivir? He’s Beys’ accomplice in the resistance. He’s not in the picture.
Ahahahahahah, Zowie…
What did they call the nut-job in the skull-cap? I thought it was Ninivir. It would help if the names were easier to tell apart.
For some reason, I feel Niniri’s kindness is well calculated… I kind of disliked how Seren is all meek before her, of course its all acting, but still one can imagine how it was a lifetime of acting like an idiot just to prevent these abusive lot of taking even more advantage of him.
Ninivir is with Beys? Sorry…I must have missed that chapter…when it happened?
It’s easier to follow when you read the book over a two hour period, not over a two year period online. Which may explain why long form comics don’t do as well online.
The guy in the cap is Vinyr.
Ninivir is in the Resistance. He is the hook nosed guy who helped get Jason to Seren’s apartments.
The names all have meanings in the language I came up with for the book, and even if they are similar, I am not changing them at this late date! LOL!
Seren means “dusk” and Sere means “dawn”, BTW.
And I know I have mentioned this before, but it is interesting to see how differently it reads one page at a time. You don’t have the immersion feeling you get when reading the book, and each page is a kind of artifact. You are forced to look at it as a single unit.
I can see why gag strips do well online and few long form stories do for a number of reasons, but this daily compartmentalization is a big one.
You make a good point, Colleen. But I also think it’s very interesting how well ADS hold up to this daily bit-by-bit. As you say, each page gets looked at as an artifact – but what we’re finding is that in your case, the artifacts are satisfying in themselves. Compositionally, I can’t think of a truly lame page at all (Yay!). But also in terms of the dramatic story-telling, each page moves something forward, always intriguing the mind on some level.
It’s really impressive how well it holds up to this scrutiny.
In the last couple of days, I’ve started contemplating doing the art for a 12 page story of my own, and it’s really expanded my appreciation of good comic book artists! It’s one thing to write a script that I think can be visually interesting, to have in my head a vague idea of what the page may look like. It’s something else entirely when I know I’m the one who will have to make the page look visually interesting!
My respect for your work has mushroomed like ten-fold — and it wasn’t tiny to start with!
That is VERY kind of you.
Some of the art in about 15 pages is actually quite weak. You may have read me mention that certain pages are copy-heavy and should have been split up: well there are a half dozen coming up.
And for some reason, I decided to use a heavy outer line all of a sudden. Don’t know what I was thinking.
I still mean to redo about 20 pages or so when I do an “absolute” collection. I think I can live with everything else. I guess that’s not bad for 1000 pages!
“Not bad for 1,000 pages” she says! Oh boy, sure, and the Sistine Chapel was “not bad for a first try”! If this isn’t bad for 1,000 – I’d love to see what you think is “good”.
That’s awfully kind! LOL!
I think if I can get through 1,000 pages and can live with all but a couple dozen, I did OK. There are about 2 dozen pages where the pages are cluttered or the storytelling is muddy, and they really need to be addressed.
Otherwise, I need to live with what I have done.
Personally I would say you could live proud of what you have achieved here. ^_^
You know that does remind me, I always wondered if you had put together a pronunciation guide for the character’s names. And I always wondered if Sere and Seren’s names were similar for any specific reason… so that answers that!
Ahhhh so it was Ninivir and Vinyr … I also mixed them up! no wonder I was confused. So Vinyr (is it pronounced Vai.near?) is Hierarchy and Ninivir is Resistance, the guy who got his arm (or was it leg?) broken previously, no?
I would vote for a pronunciation/translation guide too. Always wondered what Niniri / Ninivir meant.
btw I read “Vinyr” as “veneer” like a shiny topcoat
Yes, I need a translation guide and pronunciations. To be perfectly cynical about it, I was hoping to set this up for a Member’s Only board for later.
Veneer as in shiny topcoat is correct.
There was a pronunciation guide in one of the issues, but I can’t recall which right now.
there was a half of one on the inside cover of one of the old magazine sized ones.
