Good wishes to all our friends and neighbors affected by the recent severe storms. Thanks for the kind notes of concern: damage took out some trees, but we are all fine.
Next week, I’ll post another original, never-before-seen full color character portrait!
And now, back to drawing the cover of Gone to Amerikay…
The Facebook fan page is here.

And for just an instant there Niniri shows her Ugly – with the eyes wide and glaring and the chin thrust forward slightly.
Colleen, I could happily look at pages and pages of your drawings of various expressions! You are superb at the little physical details that convey the emotions – you know which lines are important for presenting something, so there’s never a clutter of extraneous lines.
I wish I had such a sure hand at drawing expressions.
Niniri probably has … backdoors into Seren’s mind that if she touches him, he’ll be an open book to her. Or he’s just so use to being bullied by the Hierarchy that any touch by any of them terrifies him.
Poor Seren…
Niniri is far more frightening than Sere could ever be. Sere was irrational and sadistic, but a total slave to her pleasures. Niniri is cold rationality, and I doubt she puts a foot out of bed without considering which one should touch the floor first.
That said, I love your skill with facial expressions and body language, as much as I dread what’s coming next because of them!
And I really enjoy reading your comments! Very inspiring.
I wonder if Seren’s songs cause pain in Niniri for some reason?
She really looks terrifying in this page.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the words to the song have some meaning. Such as “I have been abused and betrayed by people I trusted, may the Holy One rain fire upon them.”
@scribblerworks – I agree 100%.
When you think of it, all that really on this page is two characters talking to each other. But the facial expressions and the changes in angles of the faces make it so much more.
That first panel is so terrifying, it could give you nightmares!
Thank you all so much.
I remember getting into an argument with a well-known comics art form guru over whether or not content like “My Dinner With Andre” would make a good comic book. He was adamant that it would not, and I was adamant that it would.
It’s years later and he may have changed his mind, so I won’t name him. But I don’t see why a conversation can’t be as as exciting or even more exciting than a battle.
Because a conversation can be a battle.
I bet buckets of blood were shed at the Algonquin Round Table.
Some rob you with a six shooter, some with a fountain pen… Who says that battles are mightier than words?
This is a battle! And Seren is winning just a little bit by appearing to lose. (Note: he’s succeeded in keeping Niniri from touching him!)
