Neil Gaiman’s CHIVALRY, adapted and illustrated by Colleen with letters by Colleen and Todd Klein – and TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, an anthology of short story adaptations of the music of Tori Amos featuring works by Colleen, David Mack and others, as well as an alternate cover by Colleen – have both been nominated for the Best Adaptation from Another Medium Eisner Award. Neil Gaiman’s CHIVALRY also scored a lettering nomination for Todd Klein. TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES was also nominated for Best Anthology, and Best Design with a Short Story nomination for Margaret Atwood and David Mack. Colleen waited 30 years for the chance to adapt CHIVALRY, so this nomination is very special. While all the contenders this year are amazing, the support and votes of our colleagues is most appreciated.

I’ve been serializing my A Distant Soil novella Soulless at my Patreon, and here is one of the illustrations. I’m quite happy with how it is moving along, and very happy with the response! For now, I am concentrating on A Distant Soil, finishing a long list of commissions, and taking on the occasional pinup or cover. I am also planning several new graphic novel projects one of which is in contract right now. But I have a multi-month window just for A Distant Soil work and I am keeping my head clear for it. Tying up all the loose ends of this story is very complicated!

I’m very happy to announce that the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Snow, Glass, Apples which I was honored to do for our publisher Dark Horse Comics has won the 2020 Eisner for Best Adaptation from Another Medium. I was also nominated for the Eisner for Best Penciler/Inker, but I’m extremely grateful for our Adaptation category win. So many great books and creators received nominations, and we are honored to be among them. You can read more about them here. I’m afraid I’ve had to cut back on my mail order operation due to my workload, but you can buy the book at all major bookstores, or ask for it at your local comic shop. Of course, it is also available at online outlets. From my Patreon page: My most sincere and humble thanks to Neil Gaiman who kindly trusts me with his work; our editor Daniel Chabon; our agent Merilee Heifetz; Dark Horse Comics; my assistant Val Trullinger; my long-suffering family who just sort of listened to me grunt and threw meat under the door while I was working; and all the kind people who voted for us because amazing books were nominated and I am extremely humbled and grateful our book was among them. Thanks to all my patrons on Patreon for helping me out this past year, being so patient while I put A DISTANT SOIL on the back burner, and for being so incredibly kind and supportive of all my work. It doesn’t get done without readers.

Coming in January, by Matt Hawkins who, in my humble opinion has the best mind for science fiction in comics, with art by me! THE CLOCK! Long delayed (mostly by me, I love the irony of the title of the book and my feet dragging on the schedule) finally on the roster and available for preorder, and please do so now so your comic retailer will have those copies for you! Many lovely words and preorder recommendations from multiple websites including SYFY and more, please do ask for it at your comic retailer NOW! In The Clock, within three weeks, hundreds of millions of healthy people worldwide contract various forms of aggressive cancer and its proliferation—seemingly a viral outbreak—stumps the best scientific minds available. But after a leading cancer researcher loses his wife and watches his nine-year-old daughter begin to succumb to the same illness, he must race against the clock to end a global conspiracy that could propel the world straight into WWIII… or worse. One of the things I’m enjoying most on this project is the covers, which are some of the best I’ve ever done! Hope you like them, too!

Was thrilled to get to do this painting for Marvel Comics! Star Wars: Dr Aphra! You can get this variant cover from your local comic retailer. Here is the info! Snow Glass Apples by Neil Gaiman with art by me has gone into a second printing. It has sold out through Diamond Distributors, which services comic shops. It will not be in major bookstores until Tuesday, August 20. If you want a first print, be sure to be at your Barnes and Noble, or other mainstream bookstore to get it as soon as possible! I believe the second print will be available in a few weeks. People have asked if I am going to have any for sale in my bookstore here online. That will have to wait for the second printing. I ordered what I thought were enough copies to make it through three shows, and sold out in the first 24 hours of Terrificon! The only copies I have left are reserved for Patrons on my Patreon, and they are already spoken for. If you want to sign up for my Patreon, it’s HERE. If you want to preoder through Amazon, you can do that, but unless you ordered some weeks ago, you will be getting the second printing. Naturally, I strongly encourage you to check your local bookstore first. I will be appearing at DragonCon and New York Comic Con! These will be my last appearances for awhile as I have too much work to do and not enough energy for travel. I will also be appearing on panels and signings and in Artist Alley. Assignments which had been pushed back are back in the game, and I just got a new graphic novel contract as well. Between all that and A Distant Soil, and some juicy commissions, there’s just no wiggle room. I am extremely grateful and happy for all the support and the incredible reception to Snow, Glass, Apples!

Was very excited to have the opportunity to do a cover for Valiant Comics’ DOCTOR MIRAGE series. Here’s the information at Diamond Previews. Please ask for it at your comic retailer! I wrote about having a health downturn on my Patreon which slowed my progress on work for the last month or two, but I’ve had my medication adjusted and should be on an upswing soon. I really want to build some momentum on A DISTANT SOIL. I haven’t been able to for awhile. On the plus side, I’ve agreed to do a project I have wanted to do for over two decades, and have returned to work on FINALITY with Warren Ellis as well. I shouldn’t need to look for any more work for awhile! My upcoming shows include TERRIFICON at the Mohegun Sun resort and casino in CT, DragonCon for my first appearance in nearly twenty years, and New York Comic Con, with my first artist alley booth space in about ten years.

A private commission for actor Nick Offerman. I’ve only done one convention appearance in the last 12 months, but I’m coming out of my shell. GALAXYCON Richmond, VA, May 31-June 2. My old buddy Keith Giffen will be in attendance. Also attending are Barry Bostwick, Micheal Dorn, John Wesley Shipp and someone I really want to meet, Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle from Beauty and the Beast, for which I did art on the Disney movie adaptation! I really need to get that graphic novel signed by her! This will be my first Virginia-based convention appearance in nearly twenty years. CHARLOTTE HEROES CON, Charlotte NC, June 14-16. This will be my first appearance in nearly a decade. One of the best comic cons in the country, this will also feature Mark Waid and Bill Sienkiewicz. Charlotte is a great town! TERRIFICON, Mohegan Sun Center, Connecticut August 9-11. The convention so nice I’ll have visited three times in the last five years! Also, my parents want a crack at that Mohegan Sun casino. This is a super convention, great venue, with top notch comics and media guests including J Michael Straczynski, George Perez and more! This is one of my favorite shows! I may be adding one more show, but the deal isn’t finalized. Also, please be aware that preorders for Neil Gaiman’s SNOW GLASS APPLES are due in a week. Please order at your comic shop using Diamond code Diamond order code APR190247 For more details see Previewsworld! Become a Patron!

Since late last year, I’ve been getting treatment for an auto-immune disorder, a disease which effects my endocrine system. I’ve seen a major difference in my struggles with brain fog and fatigue. After I first got my diagnosis and had a few weeks of treatment, I felt even worse. I wrote a number of posts on life hacks I’ve used with varying degrees of success in my art career, assuming the twilight awareness I experienced would be the way I would have to live forever. However, I’ve had little difficulty with brain fog over the last 60-90 days. With few exceptions, my brain is clear. I can now recall strings of numbers, dates and other important information in a way I have not been able to for almost twelve years. I don’t have to repeatedly check my plane ticket when I travel, I don’t forget where I put things. I can remember storylines and professional obligations. I don’t get upset like I used to. Almost all of my anxiety issues have completely disappeared. Nerves which kept me on edge nearly every day and made working on my art almost impossible have completely evaporated. Except for normal issues with “Holy cow, look at my work load,” I am chill again. Edema is way down. Facial swelling was particularly annoying and disfiguring. I’m back down to size 6 clothing, almost a size 4. Energy is up and down. Some days I feel as if I was never ill, and other days I feel completely wiped out. I still get dizziness and vertigo on occasion. I understand this is a normal rollercoaster event while the doc tries to figure out optimum levels for my medication. This could take another six months, and I’ll require semi-annual tweaks forever, unless someone finds a cure. Interesting how people tried to pathologize the way I was feeling, living in almost constant pain, when all I needed was a $10 a month thyroid supplement. Thanks to those assholes who declared that I was “neurotic”. Yes, Heidi, I mean you. My migraines are still with me, but not as severe. I’ve only had two major migraines this year. I used to get them weekly. I still get migraines about 3 times a month, but they are nothing like the ones I used to experience: one Maxalt knocks them right out. I might not feel well for a couple of days and need some rest, but otherwise, I just push on. I feel like I am being let out of jail. I am grateful for the many wonderful people who have discussed their issues with me. It is nice to know I am not alone, and also to know what I can expect in future. The brain fog has been bad, but the personality changes haven’t been fun, either. My family commented on how mellow I seem now. It was nice to hear. Over the years, I’ve become accustomed to taking everything slowly. While I still have to be mindful, I need to adjust my lifestyle, get used to a faster pace again, and challenge myself more. I’ve been so down for so long, I forgot what it felt like to feel up. For now I have to concentrate on getting a bunch of very late assignments back on track. I feel pretty lucky, and hope anyone out there who is experiencing the same symptoms I did will talk to their doctor about possible endocrine dysfunction. Graves Disease, Hashimoto’s Disease, etc. If your thyroid reading is normal but in the upper half of the normal range, you could be sick and feel terrible and your doctor won’t do a thing. My doctor made no effort to look further even when my thyroid reading was less than 1/2 % below danger zone. Until it suddenly went sky high, no effort was made to investigate further. I’m sure most people have absolutely no idea what their readings are or what to look for when they see them. I sure didn’t. I don’t think my doctor is a bad person, but when you’ve got a disease none of their other patients are likely to have, they simply may not know what to look for. I look forward to drawing all day again. To travel. To exercise. To reading books and remembering what I read. To getting back to my French lessons. Thank you to everyone for your support and patience. For all of you out there also experiencing chronic illness, most sincere hopes for a full and happy recovery. In other totally unrelated good news our weird rural internet, which has been costing me HUNDREDS of dollars per month (yes, I mean up to $350 a month for internet) has finally been upgraded, and we now get double the bandwidth. We used to get unlimited bandwidth after midnight, and that had me staying up until 2 AM most days trying to upload work or watch a video. I shouldn’t have to do that anymore, and I am thrilled at the prospect of saving up to $250 a month on ridiculous overage charges. That’ll help me pay these medical bills, for sure. Oh, and I’ll just plug my Patreon here. It’s pretty dandy, if I do say so myself.
