Niniri
I posted the wrong version of this piece earlier, lamenting the fact that I did not have a high resolution copy of it, and found it minutes later. Duh. There is another color version of this piece, better, I think, than this, which uses pre-fab digital art elements. I was trying my hand at different techniques. Obviously, I’ve learned something about digital art since then!

D’mer
I’m afraid I don’t have a high resolution scan of this piece, which is a digital, pencil, and an oil emulsion combo. So, this piece is not as large as some of the other pinups I’ve posted. Sorry. I have the master files of the independent elements and may try to redo it sometime. But here is D’mer in all his glory. Enjoy.

D’mer: Alternate Cover
I didn’t really get the hang of digital painting until recently. For most of my career, I’ve done analog art, and making the transition was a little rocky. When I first gave it a go, it was hard to find a place to get any kind of training. In the end I had to muddle through on my own, though there are so many great online tutorials now, I bet I would have made a lot more progress had they been around 10 years back! Anyway, since my digital skills were limited, I balked at doing the cityscape I was aiming for on this cover, and tried dropping in this…

A DISTANT SOIL by Tomoko Tanaguchi
This is one of my very favorite A DISTANT SOIL illustrations from IMAGES of A DISTANT SOIL, a pinup gallery published by Image Comics in 1996. Tomoko Tanagucki is a lovely person and a wonderful manga artist whose published works include Aquarium, Call Me Princess, and Miss Me?. Tomoko and I got to hang out when I fist went to Japan! It was so much fun! I am delighted to show you her charming work!

A DISTANT SOIL by Dave Lapham
Dave Lapham is the creator of Stray Bullets. He has worked on many comics for Marvel and DC, including Superman, Daredevil and Wolverine. It’s fascinating to see my work drawn by different people with such a range of styles! This is another pinup from IMAGES OF A DISTANT SOIL published by Image Comics in 1996.

LORD RAVEN by WALT SIMONSON
In 1996, Image Comics published a book of A DISTANT SOIL pinups by some of my favorites artists. Among them, this beautiful pinup of LORD RAVEN in pen and ink by the wonderful Walt Simonson! GORGEOUS! What a delight! For now,w e are loading pinups 1 day a week. But, digitally restored pages from A DISTANT SOIL Book 1 THE GATHERING uploaded 5 days a week! Use the drop down menu SELECT STORY and choose A DISTANT SOIL THE GATHERING to begin. Follow along with the comic by using the bookmarks function! Yes, I am gearing up to get back to the project and finish off the last eight issues.

Mermen!
This gorgeous painting is by animator/illustrator Jozef Szekeres, who designed the Australian Olympics mascot. He is also well known for his work at Disney Animation. And he designs beautiful dolls! In 1996, Image Comics published a book of pinups based on A DISTANT SOIL, and this was Jozef’s contribution. It’s so gorgeous! Jozef is very fond of mermaids, and they appear in a lot of his works. Here he’s painted Seren and D’mer from A DISTANT SOIL having a lovely ride on a couple of handsome mermen! This painting was created using animation cel paint. I am lucky to be able to bring it to you with Jozef’s permission, scanned…

Serezha
This is one of those times you do a character portrait, and it becomes the definitive portrait, everything you do before and after just doesn’t measure up! Serezha looks alive to me here, I’m so happy with this drawing. It’s tricky to bring life to into a picture of someone when you never had a model for them. I considered coloring this one, but I decided I need to move on with new work right now. Don’t forget to check the sidebar for updated files of pages of the comic. The archives were wiped out over a year ago, and I am reloading them all at the rate of 5…

That’s some big ’80’s hair
The original painting to this is long gone. This is scanned from a photocopy, hence the grainy look. It was the cover for A DISTANT SOIL #8. I originally drew this way back in the 1980’s but didn’t finish the painting and publish it until years later. I sent a copy of the original sketch to a fanzine for their use only to find they repainted it and sold it with the characters redone in Grecian robes. I don’t mind fan art at all, but I thought it was bad form to take my unpublished sketch, redo the costumes and sell it! That was quite a surprise. Anyway, I mean…
