I just rediscovered A Distant Soil. It’s been years since I’ve thought about it, though I used to collect the comic enthusiastically… I was in college, and it was a difficult time for me, eventually culminating in wrapping myself in the cult I was raised in and turning my back on a lot of what made me myself… Looking back though, I realize that A Distant Soil was one of the first positive portrayals (along with Strangers in Paradise, and Shoujo Kakumei Utena) of non-hetero people I was ever aware of. So, on this rather monumental day, may I say a much belated thank you, Colleen? Thank you for being a voice in the dark, though I couldn’t hear it at the time. Thank you for being one of the things that planted the seed of thought in my mind that maybe I wasn’t broken, maybe there was something to the part of myself I was denying. As a now proud B in the LGBTQ+ community, I thank you for being there even when I wasn’t ready to hear what I needed to.
Forgive my dramatics 🙂 I’m just a bit excited tonight, and so thrilled to have found you after all these years. I can’t wait to order all the graphic novels and finally finish the story I began so long ago.
