This is the final page from A DISTANT SOIL: THE GATHERING. This did not appear in the original comic series, and it didn’t appear as shown here in the restored new edition graphic novel, because I totally screwed up and no one caught it before it went to press! Kovar regains upper hand. Order restored. One of the biggest influences on my work was an obscure graphic novel called Empire by Samuel R. Delany and Howard Chaykin. Originally published in 1978, I found it in a library, which not only makes this book one of the first graphic novels, but an early recipient of bookshelf respect. It had a great deal to do with molding my ideas about what comics were and could be, and was a direct influence on A Distant Soil. My thinking for D’mer in this scene is that he would not be that broken up ( on a personal level, anyway) over deaths in Seren’s house because he’s not that close to the rest of the staff. He deliberately distances himself, and most of them don’t approve of him anyway.
