• That’s some big ’80’s hair

The original painting to this is long gone. This is scanned from a photocopy, hence the grainy look. It was the cover for A DISTANT SOIL #8. I originally drew this way back in the 1980’s but didn’t finish the painting and publish it until years later. I sent a copy of the original sketch to a fanzine for their use only to find they repainted it and sold it with the characters redone in Grecian robes. I don’t mind fan art at all, but I thought it was bad form to take my unpublished sketch, redo the costumes and sell it! That was quite a surprise. Anyway, I mean…

  • Page Updates Now 5 Days a Week!

As many of you already know, our archives were wiped out in a blog update. Restoring the files from a backup archive was impossible, because the new system requires different image file formatting. I’ve now got a little time to devote to A DISTANT SOIL again, so I will update a new page 5 days a week. These pages are superior, high quality digital scans, and I vow to make sure the entirety of Volume I will be back on the web in the coming months. After that, we’ll see how things go.

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS! NEW!

This is the first time this has been published. This portrait of Seren is based on a pen and ink drawing I did way back in 1989. I wanted to practice my digital painting skills, so decided to give this a try. It took about a day to redo this work from scratch! While some of the snowflakes are mine, others are from a Photoshop set by Meldir, which you can download for free from here. I didn’t intend to go quite this far when coloring the piece! I thought I would just do comic book style colors, but I just kept going! It’s also great to have some time…

  • Liana

This is a convention sketch that I’d hoped to color and post here, but I did not realize the scan is of very poor quality, so it would be a wasted effort. Sorry about that! I have been out of town for a whole week and didn’t get much art done, so Thanksgiving will be catch up time for me! My family will be here for the holiday, and we are all a jolly bunch, so I expect to not only have a lovely time with them, but to be happy and content making art. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday! If you are looking for a unique…

This piece has a convoluted history. It was published in a color version of the series in 1989. I was never able to get a good scan of the art, so did some digital tweaking years later. It’s some of my earliest digital work, so it has issues. I didn’t even know how to use layers back then. It’s still a nice image, and I’m glad to be able to bring it to you in a good scan. NOW AVAILABLE! Get AMAZING FANTASTIC INCREDIBLE STAN LEE signed by Colleen with FREE shipping, a FREE signed comic, and a FREE mini print! The cover with fancy foil and embossing which totally…

  • A Distant Soil Spanish Edition

There was a Spanish edition of A DISTANT SOIL, published some years ago. I’m afraid I never saw a copy of it, nor was I paid for it, so there you go. I’m told the printing quality was awful. It’s the sort of thing that happens when someone thinks they can get good results out of scanning from a book art that uses tone sheets, and then reprinting from those scans. You get mud, is what you get. Anyway, this cover has a couple of different versions, but this was only seen in Spain.

This is one of my earliest attempts at digital color. I tested myself on many of my old drawings, such as this one dated 1989. But I really didn’t understand much about layers, saving files, etc, so many of my pieces were not saved at proper resolution. This one is at a decent resolution, and could be used for print, if need be.
